Want to feel truly valued in your role and help provide an essential service? the Workplace Injury Commission is for you

There’s no time to be bored at the Workplace Injury Commission. Just ask Zeena Haidar, our committed Finance Business Partner. For Zeena, being involved in all areas of our organisation keeps her engaged. Born and raised in Melbourne, this enthusiastic finance whiz is also connected to the purpose of the Workplace Injury Commission, and wants to help make her city a better place. With a great deal of support and true friendships with her colleagues, here’s why Zeena is passionate about turning our proud legacy into a bright future.

Knowing her efforts count

Zeena Haidar only chooses to work for an organisation if they’re in the business of helping people. With an impressive resume of past experiences, Zeena was searching for a place where her accounting and business management skills would be valued. But above everything, she wanted to walk into the office each day knowing it would improve her hometown of Melbourne. At the Workplace Injury Commission, Zeena found both.

“I feel that I play an important role in how the organisation operates”, Zeena says. “I help to provide information to the leadership team about our finances to ensure we’re making the right decisions. I choose to be part of an organisation that is providing a service to society. That’s why the Workplace Injury Commission is right for me.”

As Finance Business Partner, Zeena isn’t directly involved in the conciliation process - but you don’t have to be to find purpose at the Workplace Injury Commission. Whether you’re working directly on disputes or enabling us behind the scenes, Zeena says everyone is passionate about helping Victorians find a way forward. The best bit? She has a deep understanding of all areas of the organisation.

“One of the best parts of working for the Workplace Injury Commission is that I have exposure to the whole finance department, for example. In other organisations you could be pigeonholed and only be a small part of the larger world of finance, but at the Workplace Injury Commission, it’s not like that. I am involved in everything, right from processing invoices to making sure we are complying with legislation. I find that really interesting.”

Turning a proud legacy into a bright future

Zeena is not the type of accountant who wants to just sit behind a computer. In her role as Finance Business Partner, she does so much more. While Zeena’s main duty is financial reporting, she is also responsible for helping to build the budget for the Workplace Injury Commission, ensuring new systems are being implemented smoothly and preparing for the end of financial year audits. And if you ask Zeena’s colleagues, they’ll tell you she always offers a helping hand when you need it most.

“There’s no time to be bored at the Workplace Injury Commission! There’s always a lot on here. I’ve had a lot of experiences where I’ve been able to help other staff members with all things finance, and I find that satisfying.”

When Zeena reflects on her time at the Workplace Injury Commission, she’s proud of the legacy she’s helped build. She joined us in 2019 as a vital member of the finance team, and was truly able to make the role her own. Now, as we enter an exciting new chapter, Zeena looks forward to making our organisation even greater. And we couldn’t be more grateful to have her expertise and determination every step of the way.

“Even with many changes, I'm really proud that our team has always been able to deliver. I feel like I’ve made a huge contribution to the Workplace Injury Commission in terms of shaping the Finance Department, and as we introduce arbitration, it’s an exciting time.”

“I work closely with other people at the Workplace Injury Commission, and everyone is really friendly and accepting. You talk to them not just on a work level, but on a personal level too. You become friends with your colleagues and those relationships are the things that keep you at an organisation.”

For those interested in working alongside Zeena or in other positions at the Workplace Injury Commission, she offers this advice:

“You have to be down to earth. We are a smaller organisation, but we are growing. There’s opportunities to move into different areas. So, as we enter a new period of change, I would encourage people to look into what a career at the Workplace Injury Commission means for them. I know in the next five years, I’ll enjoy what I’m doing here.”
